With great pleasure, we announce that we have selected Bernhard Scheiner as PhD Student of the Month January 2021. Bernhard is enrolled in the N790 programme „Clinical Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition“ and works at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine III.
Bernhard’s scientific effort and clinical work focus on vascular liver diseases. These entities represent rare diseases that may occur with or without intrinsic parenchymal liver disease. Beside portal vein thrombosis, a recently defined entity, termed porto-sinusoidal vascular disease, is considered to be a vascular liver disease. These diseases are commonly associated with prothrombotic conditions and cause significant morbidity and mortality, explaining the need for optimal diagnostic and therapeutic management.
Specifically, Bernhard’s thesis project deals with the detection of risk factors as well as the description of incidence and outcome of patients with various vascular liver diseases. Furthermore, he is very active in the fields of advanced chronic liver disease (i.e. liver fibrosis/cirrhosis), portal hypertension and hepatocellular carcinoma. Bernhard’s scientific activities have already led to numerous publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, amongst these publications as first author in the top-ranked journals „Journal of Hepatology“, „Liver International“, „Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics“ and „Liver Cancer“.
