We are honoured to present the PhD Student of the Month for May 2022, Arkadiusz Komorowski. He is enrolled in the N790 programme „Clinical Neurosciences“ (CLINS) and works at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.
In his thesis project within the framework of the „NeuroImaging Labs“ (NIL) at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Arkadiusz explores the relationship between in-vivo dopamine and serotonin signaling and post-mortem gene expression, applying different neuroimaging techniques such as positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging. Thereby, Arkadiusz simultaneously engages in forensic science and research about molecular changes in the human brain, which will ultimately help to bridge the gap between the social sciences and biology and will, eventually, reduce mental health stigma.
During the last years, Arkadiusz has also been working in a forensic psychiatric institution and conducted preventive human rights monitoring visits. The aim of such visits is to ensure that the rights of patients/residents/inmates of institutions such as nursing homes or prisons are protected. In particular, the restriction of personal liberty or (potential) cases of deprivation are of concern.
Arkadiusz‘ research efforts have already led to various publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals such as „Cerebral Cortex“ and „NeuroImage“. Congratulations!
